Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has officially unveiled the electrified 7th generation of its iconic Transporter and Caravelle vans. With the introduction of both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) options, Volkswagen is making a significant step into the electric era.
The new Transporter offers a variety of configurations to suit different needs. The panel van is ideal for goods transport, while the Kombi is tailored for passenger transport and comes with an optional double cab variant. Both versions can be ordered with a high roof and extended wheelbase for added cargo capacity.
For those seeking a more luxurious passenger experience, the Caravelle is an excellent option. It can seat up to nine passengers and is available in three distinct trim levels: entry-level, mid-range Life, and top-of-the-line Style. The Caravelle also offers an extended wheelbase option.
Volkswagen’s plug-in hybrid version boasts a combined output of 232 PS (171 kW) and is already available for order. Additionally, three electric drive options are planned, with power outputs ranging from 136 PS (100 kW) to 286 PS (210 kW) and a net battery capacity of 64 kWh. A lower-powered electric version with a smaller battery is also in development for urban delivery applications. The all-electric models will be rear-wheel drive, with an all-wheel drive version expected later.
The new Transporter and Caravelle models retain Volkswagen’s distinctive design cues, including a high dash panel, elevated seat position, and ergonomic controls. The vans have grown in size, offering increased load capacity. The standard wheelbase version now has a maximum stowage volume of 5,800 liters, while the long wheelbase and high roof variants can accommodate up to 9,000 liters of cargo.
Standard features for the new models include LED headlights and tail lights, an electronic parking brake with Auto Hold, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration, keyless start, and a suite of driver assistance technologies.
Volkswagen has also introduced the PanAmericana equipment package for both the Transporter and Caravelle, perfect for off-road adventures. This package includes rugged styling elements like all-terrain trims, protective film wraps, illuminated stainless steel inlays, exclusive seat fabrics, and black high-gloss dash panel applications.
Pre-sales for the new Transporter have begun in Europe, with prices starting at €36,780. However, the official market launch is scheduled for Q1 2025.
